The team from Desert Feet Tour are heading to Wangkatjungka, 130km south east of Fitzroy Crossing in remote northwest WA to work with the community to deliver a two week cultural project themed β€˜Health and Healing Through Music’.

Where is Wangkatjungka?

Desert Feet Tour has had a long association with Wangkatjungka community, and renowned musician, and respected Elder and community leader Kankawa Nagarra (Olive Knight). Desert Feet Tour and the Wangkatjungka community will come together to engage in a series of music workshops exploring how music can be used as a tool for emotional expression, healing from trauma and grief, and the building of intergenerational peer support networks. Funded by the WA Mental Health Commission and Nomad Two Worlds Foundation, this project has been set up to be in full control of the Wangkatjungka Community – we are just there to grease the wheels!

A new idea for mental health

This revolutionary pilot project brings together an interdisciplinary team of professional musicians, music therapists and trauma researcher Dr Petra Skeffington to look at how music can be a force for social cohesion and community healing following collective grief and bereavement. The Desert Feet Tour crew know all too well the benefits of music and the ancillary benefits of music participation, and we hope to provide remote communities with the opportunity to express themselves through engaging with music as a recreational activity, a hobby, or even a career.

The community are in control

The project has been developed and will be led by the Wangkatjungka community and will focus on a series of workshops designed to facilitate stronger connections with language, culture, and expression of identity and emotions through the creative process. With our 4×4 truck and mobile stage with recording studio, Desert Feet Tour crew will be on hand to assist the community to produce and record media, record local bands, introduce young people to the benefits of music, and work with the community to generally make life better through participation in music.
