It’s been a while coming…things have been pretty hectic in Desert Feet land! Here’s the wrap … The town of Newman, Western Australia is the administrative centre of Australia’s largest Local Council – Shire of East Pilbara, and home to lots of people of Nyiyapali, Martu and other language groups […]
We think this is a first – Wangkatjungka Community will create their own music-based program to improve mental health in the community – their way, their language, their ideas. Desert Feet have partnered with Murdoch University researcher Dr Petra Skeffington to help guide and evaluate the outcomes. It starts next week!
Week 1 of the June 2017 Desert Feet Tour… We had two missions: run a program at the two primary schools in Newman, and inspire and engage young folks at the East Pilbara Youth Centre after school. Schools Program The brief – blend musical inspiration with some education, add liberal doses […]
Last year some time, Pip, the Community Development Manager at East Pilbara Shire, and his side-kick chased me down as I was driving the Desert Feet Troopy through Nullagine, on the way home from a Desert Feet Tour. They saw the Troopy, busted a U-ey and flagged me down. It’s […]
Our Shire of East Pilbara contact, Pip, had suggested that we let the schools know we were coming to Newman. But these things are important and, tragically, we have had to make those phone calls and do those things.
Our first and only Honorary Life Member, Kankawa Nagarra (Olive Knight) has once again been nominated for a prestigious award – the Celebrate WA Aboriginal Award! The ceremony is tonight at the Crown Ballroom in Perth, Western Australia. We won’t be there in person – but we send our love and wishes […]
Another music video from the Western Desert! In April this year, we travelled with the Ngurra Kujungka mob to Irrungadji Community (Nullagine, WA) to do some school holiday program workshops. Ewan, Angus and Louise flew to Telfer Gold Mine, courtesy of the Newcrest Mining Telfer Community Relations mob, and then […]
Today we got cracking on making a song with these supercool kids in Nullagine. We had a bit of a think about it – what would be the best thing? We’ve got instruments such as violins, trumpets and that kind of ‘orchestral’ vibe. We’ve also got all the ‘band’ gear […]
